Keeping connections after uni

From halls to social media: staying in touch after uni

After spending a few years together, it can be hard to realise you won't see your uni friends every day. But that doesn't mean those relationships will fade. Here are a few tips on how you can maintain friendships and stay connected to each other after graduation:

Little Things ❤️

Small, low-effort actions can really make a difference in keeping the friendship alive whilst living away from each other. Try...

🗣️ Low- pressure voice notes: Send quick updates to each other whilst you're getting ready for the day or nipping to the shops.

📱 Share content: Send Instagram reels or TikToks to each other. Something that can make you both laugh, especially in those moments when you miss each other.

🎶 Share playlists: Create a Spotify playlist together so you can listen at the same time. You can also use the blend feature that creates a playlist of what you are both currently listening to.

Make Traditions 🍻

If you live quite far away from each other, you could try starting some digital traditions.

  • Gaming nights: Start a Discord together and play your favourite games, or even try some new ones!
  • Virtual cooking: Cook the same recipe together over FaceTime and have a catch-up and eat together. You could even have the same playlist in the background and have a dance party.
  • Movies: You can stream the same show together on a set weeknight. This is a good one if you've always watched movies together in halls/at university.

Little Reminders 🌷

Even though you might not see them every day, you could do little things that remind you of your uni friends and things to keep the memory of student living alive.

Photo wall

Collect all your favourite photos of you and your uni mates and make a collage on your wall, or attach them to some fairy lights. You might feel closer to them by having the photos displayed, and if you have guests over, you can go through each silly moment!

Some mates will be better than others to stay in touch, but don't take it personally, life just gets busy after university. Be patient, and carry on doing the little things bit by bit to keep checking in with them and keeping each other updated!
