With the last few weeks in your accommodation upon us, it’s almost time to say goodbye to your room! Moving out might feel like a lot, but don’t worry—we’ve put together this handy checklist to help make the process easy and stress-free.
Remember to move out of your accommodation by 9:30am on the last day of your tenancy agreement.
1. Get a Head Start
It’s easy to leave everything until the last minute, but starting your move-out preparations early will save you a lot of stress. Try to begin at least two weeks before your move-out date.
2. Sort Through Your Stuff
Take time to decide what you want to keep, donate, sell, or throw away. This will make packing a lot easier and give you a fresh start.
- Keep: Items you'll need at your next place.
- Donate: Clothes, books, and things you no longer use. You can drop them off in donation boxes, like the ones from the British Heart Foundation at reception!
- Sell: Textbooks, furniture, or electronics you don’t need. Websites like eBay, Depop, or Facebook Marketplace work great for selling.
- Toss: Anything broken or no longer useful.
3. Update Subscriptions & Forward Mail
Don’t forget to cancel or transfer any subscriptions or memberships. Also, make sure to update your address for any important mail (like bank statements), and don’t forget to update the autofill on your phone.
Remember, the University and Halls Management won’t forward your post after you leave, so make sure you set up mail forwarding before you go.
4. Clean Everything
When your licence ends, it’s really important to leave your room as clean as it was when you arrived. If you don’t meet the cleaning standards, the University may charge you to clean it. Save some money by doing it yourself! Here’s a checklist for each area:
- Kitchen: Clean all appliances, surfaces, and cupboards. Don’t forget to defrost and empty the fridge/freezer.
- Bathroom: Scrub the toilet, sink, shower, and floors.
- Living Areas: Dust, vacuum, and wipe down all surfaces.
- Bedroom: Empty drawers, vacuum, and clean the windows.
5. Maintenance Requests
If something in your flat needs fixing, now’s the time to submit any maintenance requests before you leave.
6. Pack Smartly
Start with packing the items you won’t need right away. Label your boxes with what’s inside and which room they belong to. This will make unpacking much easier when you get to your new place.
Pro Tip: Set aside an essentials box with things you’ll need right away, like toiletries, a change of clothes, and basic kitchen items.
7. Double-Check for Valuables
If you leave any valuables behind, the University or Hall team will try to reach you to arrange pickup. You’ll have two weeks after your licence ends to collect your things. If you want them mailed, you’ll need to pay the postage. After two weeks, any unclaimed items may be donated to charity, sold to cover any debts, or disposed of if they have little value.
Remember, you could also be charged for the university disposing of your items, so it is important to check around for any rubbish or unwanted items.
8. Return Your Keys
Make sure you return your keys to reception on or before your last day. If the keys need to be recut for someone else to move in, you’ll be charged for the cost plus a small administration fee.
