Everything you need to know

Living in university accommodation is one of the top highlights of your student experience. But it also means lots of people under one roof, so fire safety only works when everyone does their bit!

Let's talk about it...

In the event of a fire:

• Immediately exit the building and go to your designated assembly point
• Dial 999 and tell your site reception
• Stay out of the building and wait for the Fire Service to arrive

Banned Items

For safety reasons, certain items are banned from university accommodations to prevent fire risks - don't be that person who sets off the fire alarm at 5am!

• Chip pans/oils in saucepans
• Deep-fat fryers
• Fan heaters/plug-in heaters
• Candles/incense sticks
• BBQs
• Fireworks

You may be tempted to decorate your room with fairy lights, candles, or other burning materials, however, these are considered dangerous and are not allowed in our accommodations. If you are caught using any of these or any item that breaches fire regulations, you may be issued a charge.

Always remember:

✅ Never leave cooking unattended

✅ ALWAYS keep fire doors closed - especially to your kitchen!

✅ Curtains in halls are fire-retardant, so DO NOT change them or hang your own

✅ Keep microwaves clean and DO NOT put anything metal inside them

✅ Keep closed containers out of microwaves as they may explode

✅ DO NOT overheat food as this may lead to 'superheating' and subsequent explosions and burns

✅ DO NOT tamper, cover, remove or interfere with smoke detectors or safety equipment

The rules aren't in place to scare you or stop you from enjoying your halls living, they're there to make sure everyone is safe and can make the most of their student life in halls.
