Living in halls means sharing a space with people. Keeping your flat clean and tidy is not only about hygiene, but it's also about having a comfortable environment for everyone and their mental health. A space where you can come back from lectures and relax.
Your responsibilities
โ Wash up after using plates, pans, and cutlery so they don't pile up in the sink.
โ Keep worktops clear and wipe them down to avoid bacteria and limescale.
โ
Make sure you sweep and mop floors regularly to prevent attracting pests.
โ
Empty your kitchen bin at least once a week - don't leave it until it's overflowing and smelly! Before taking your bins out, remember to check what you can and can't recycle.
โ Stick to one shelf each to keep things organised.
โ Make sure to keep food covered and stored properly to avoid attracting pests.
โ Don't overfill frezers and remove food that has been there more than a month.
โ Before you go to the food shop, take a look in your fridge and throw away anything that's gone off - this is a good time to wipe down the shelves before stocking them back up!
โ Clean your toilet and shower weekly - make sure you use a good bathroom spray.
โ Put toilet cleaner in your toilet every morning
โ Top tip: for any limescale that may occur, use a toothbrush to scrub behind any small areas like a tap!
โ Keep your room tidy by cleaning surfaces and vacuuming
โ Make sure that nothing blocks doors or corridors
โ You need to keep an eye out for mould and report it as soon as you find any.
โ Preventing mould includes opening windows when hanging laundry, regularly cleaning, etc.
Tips for cleaning your flat
- Shared living agreement: At the start of the term, make a plan with each other about how you would like to manage cleaning and other responsibilities. You can even make a chart to put on the fridge/in the kitchen.
- Little and often: It's a lot easier to do small cleaning jobs regularly than to take care of a big mess later.
- Respect each other: Everyone has different habits and standards, so be prepared to compromise and communicate if something isn't working. Remember that when exam season kicks in, people might be focusing more on their studies rather than beign motivated to clean so communication is key here!
A clean and tidy space makes life easier for everyone. It's hygienic, helps avoid unnecessary conflict between flatmates, and is great for your mental health and wellbeing โค๏ธ
