When it comes to moving out of halls, the temptation to chuck everything in a black bin bag and call it a day is very real, but your stuff could really make a difference for others.
We have seen more and more waste left when students move out over the years. To help us change this, lets be kinder to the environment and support local charities. So before you bin that hairdryer or toss out those jeans that didn't make the cut, donate them.
We have plenty of handy drop-off points for your unwanted items to make it as easy as possible:
- Unopened food and hygiene products – drop these off at your reception to help support Leicester South Foodbank.
- Clothes and fabrics – see where your nearest red British Heart Foundation donation point is, there should be one near all of our accommodations.
- Kitchen equipment and room decor (no electricals) – drop these off at your reception to give them a new lease of life, being re-used for other students and conference guests.
- Bulkier items, e.g. furniture – you can book to have these items collected by Leicester City Council.
More eco-friendly tips ♻️
- Energy – make sure you turn off all the lights, heating and smaller electrical appliances, like kettles and microwaves, when you move out to avoid wasting energy (close all the windows and doors too!). Please leave all fridges/freezers on so they don't defrost.
- Water – make sure all taps in kitchens and bathrooms are turned off to avoid wasting water, and please report any dripping taps through our maintenance form.
- Kitchen waste – empty all bins in your kitchen into the correct large bins outside to avoid bad smells and mould building up.
- Electronics – any broken electrical and electronic equipment should NOT be disposed of in the non-recyclable or recycling bins. Vapes should go in the e-cigarette bins on campus. Please email ecs-services@leicester.ac.uk to arrange collection for the correct disposal.
Just remember that when you're clearing things out from shared spaces, other students may be staying in the flat longer than you so don't turn off appliances that are in use or dispose of other people's belongings.
If you have any other questions, please email accommodation@le.ac.uk and they will be happy to help.
Wishing you a smooth (and sustainable) move!
