There is so much to explore across Leicester, and it's good to break out of the student bubble every once in a while! Here's our guide to Leicester to help you on your way...
1. Explore the green spaces
One of the great things about Leicester is the amount of greenery around, even though you're in a city! The most popular spots are:
- Victoria Park
- Abbey Park
- Bradgate Park (famous for its deer herd)
- University of Leicester Botanical Gardens (right next door to The Village)
2. Take a trip to the cinema or theatre
You don't have to travel far to find great entertainment in Leicester. Right next to campus is De Montfort Hall, which offers a variety of entertainment (and also where you graduate!)
The Curve theatre in the Cultural Quarter also shows a wide range of productions.
If you're into alternative films, the Phoenix theatre in the Cultural Quarter is a great independent cinema to try out.
3. Attend one of Leicester's many festivals
You'll have lots of opportunities to join in one of Leicester's many festivals, which include:
- Diwali celebrations (the biggest outside of India!)
- Leicester Comedy Festival
- Riverside Festival
- Caribbean Carnival
- Leicester Pride
4. Visit a museum
One of Leicester's most famous attractions is the National Space Centre, which is well worth a visit. There's also Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, where you can find dinosaur skeletons, fossils and lots of art and photography. Plus, it's only a 10-minute walk from campus.
A must-see for anyone studying at the University of Leicester is the King Richard III Visitor Centre. It has strong links to the University after the discovery of Richard III's skeleton in a Leicester car park in 2012.
5. Go to a sporting event
Whether you're into football, rugby, cricket or anything else, Leicester has lots of opportunities for sports fans to get involved.
In 2016, Leicester City Football Club made global headlines by winning the English Premier League. The underdog story has been celebrated across the city (and the globe) and certainly put Leicester on the map. King Power Stadium is only a short walk away from the main campus.
There's also the Leicester Tigers, Leicester's famous rugby club, who have won the championship ten times since league rugby was introduced in 1987.
